  • Mother-Daughter Secret Code Words...

Do you argue with your siblings? Do your children argue with their siblings? We all have... but how do these sibling relationships and other friendship problems affect a young persons self-esteem? Think about how your parent/child relationship affect the young adults in your home. As a parent, your influence will affect their ideas, values and beliefs. Todays 30A VYBZ #balance topic is about family connection and strengthening the bond - specifically how you can implement a codeword to improve communication with your teen or tween. Keep scrolling for this important tip that even someday save your child's life. Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” It can be hard for a tween to chat with their parent(s) – or anyone – about a tricky subject like bullying or even worse, being in a scenario where they feel ashamed. A private 'code word' may help him/her to talk when they are feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Don't miss a thing, be sure to SIGN UP for our next magazine/blog article! next balance issue: 002 Parents need to listen without judgement Read that a second time, and let it sink in. Maybe even read it again... Parents need to listen without Judgement. Often times, this age group will tell a little white lie and the reason they do so it frequently because they want to stay "connected" to you. The ideal environment for you to create for your child is one where you are not judgmental and you can hold your child's perspectives in view & maintain reasonability. Teens and tweens can find themselves in scenarios that they didn't choose to be in, or that have turned very awkward or uncomfortable for them and even causing them to feel mis-placed guilt. Putting them in a situation to choose between protecting their friends and social status vs an adult from knowing about it can create an internal struggle for them. if your child is confident in their relationship with you , they will feel more confident to bring sensitive issues to you. BECOME A POSITIVE BODY IMAGE CONTENT CREATOR for 30A VYBZ and OTHER BRANDS Using a codeword for dealing with problems Many professional teen psychologist suggests creating a fun and unique codeword that you and your child can use to create an open and honest conversation with you regarding common tween/teenage problems or when he/she wants to talk about a sensitive issue. Situations when codewords come in handy include: • Doing badly at school • Attending a party where there are drugs or alcohol • Being touched inappropriately • Developing problematic eating habits • Sexting ( 70.9% of tweens have encountered sexting) • Being teased or harassed • Relationship advice • Having feelings hurt by a family member or friend Developing a shared, private codeword or phrase with your child could strengthen your relationship by preventing communication issues and allowing you to help them when they need it most. Let them know that they can can call or text you and use your codeword whenever necessary, even if away from you and as a code from you to come help them. Tip: You can even encourage older siblings to create codewords as well! In his book Raising Girls, psychologist Steve Biddulph suggests aunts, older sisters, or female adult friends can play significant roles in girls’ lives as trusted confidantes. • Teens & Tweens | 7 Signs of a True Friend | 30A Florida, Watercolor Beach

We are excited to feature these two sisters (in the middle) and each of their besties for this fun article on '7 signs of a true friend'. We met up with these gals (and their parents) over at Watercolor Gardens over on 30A in Florida and then headed across the street over to the white sandy beaches for a beautiful sunset. While God chooses our family members, we choose our friends, and sometimes, the friends we bring into our lives intentionally can mean just as much as our family, if not more. Our healthy relationships with our friends help us live a more joyful and meaningful life in way we don't even think of. We should never under value a true friend and those who support us though the good days and our bad days (we all have them). 1 Corinthians 15:33 tells us that bad company corrupts good character, it ruins good morals. 1. True and caring friends will accept you for who you are! Supportive friends that truly care about you will love you for the person you are, flaws and all. And if you have brothers or sisters, we need to remember that we should always be this to our own family members. Accepting someone for how they are does not mean that you have to agree on every subject or even have the same passions. In fact, different views and outlooks from our trusted friends can help expand our horizons. Don't ever hide your quirks and imperfections, as true friends love YOU for those reasons! 2. True and caring friends will accept you for who you are! Let's face it, at any age, life has its ups and downs. Building supportive friendships at any age can help us get through the hard times, but building them during our teen years can create LIFE LONG FRIENDSHIPS and memories. A true friend, because they love you, will stand by to help overcome difficult moments and help face peer pressure issues. That could mean giving a shoulder to cry on, listening to your problems, or finding ways to cheer you up. Those small gestures can mean a lot especially during moments of self-doubt or nervousness. 3. True and caring friends will Celebrate Life with You As we go from our teen years to college and onto building our own careers and families, a friend’s support not only matters during the hard times. A true friendship means each of you genuinely encourages the other to succeed. Unfortunately, disingenuous people may feel insecure and want you to fail. But a true and caring friend celebrates your life milestones, accomplishments, and journeys; and feels happy to see things go well. 4. True and caring friends Will Make the Time for you to Feel Valued In life, and especially during teen years, our hectic schedules make it difficult to see our friends and even family as much as we would like. Your bestest friends will treat you as a priority and set aside quality time to catch up, whether through a phone call, stopping by the house, or even hopping on FaceTime to share some news. 5. True and caring friends Will Tell You the Rough Stuff Believe it or not, if you choose your friends the right way, you will surround yourself with individuals who share your same core values. In this way, you can count on your friends to give good advice and help guide you through both exciting and difficult life adventures. Sometimes, we may not notice ourselves falling off track. A good friend will help us make better choices even if that means saying something we don’t always want to hear. 6. True and caring friends will Encourage You to Achieve Your Goals Each and everyone one of us should strive to become the best version of ourselves, and a true friend will support you in achieving personal improvement. Whether it means cutting out unhealthy habits, pursuing a dream job, or cultivating a creative outlet, friends will give us the motivation to help follow through with the things we want to achieve. 7. True and caring friends Helps Us Feel Comfortable >>> SPECIALLY WRITTEN FOR YOU, BY ALICIA TAPPEN, FROM THE SECRET PLACE <<< Transparency breeds trust. Being vulnerable and transparent as the friend listening to a difficult issue, it can be hard to refrain from giving advice. Providing fake comfort, like “it will work out”, “you’re going to be fine,” “it’s not that big of a deal,” is silencing the voice of your friend who is confiding in you. Let the friend vent, and then validate her with her own words. Show her that you care and are listening intently by using her own words to confirm her emotions. When she says, “I’m so mad at them...” Repeat her words, “so you are mad at them.” Simple as it sounds, this takes the pressure off you for having to have the perfect advice, and instead allies you with your friend who needs reassurance that her feelings are valid. Remember, they are trusting you with their personal secrets. If this is something that you know you need to tell someone because there is abuse, neglect, or something criminal involved, it is ok to get the information through consistency and non-reactivity. Being consistent and nonreactive means when they share the hard things, you don’t make faces of disgust, or show anger, but instead stay nonreactive. They don’t need added shame, fear, or doubt. Let your friend know that depending on what is shared, you might have to tell someone who can help them. It is best to have that conversation before they give all the details, because getting an adult, law enforcement, or other authorities might be the right answer, but it will never be the easy one. Letting your friend know that their secret is safe from their peers, but some information can only be handled by the law or other 3rd parties. Doing the right thing will be hard, but together, it can be done gently and smoothly. www.thesecretplacehome.org Don't try to force that special connection between friends. It just happens. True friendships are people come together and feeling completely at ease being themselves with who they are around. Whether it means laughing at silly jokes, talking with a fun accent for hours, or talking the night away, a long-lasting friendship involves an easy connection in which individuals understand each other when simply showing all their quirks and inseuritiees. Do you know of a special person who shows all the signs of a true friend? Don’t forget to be a good friend in return and show how much you care. Even if you haven't talked in a while, remember to reach out to the important people in your life who love and support you. Gotta love that sister connection! • Positive Body Image | Social Media & Wellbeing

How does social media affect a teen or tween s wellbeing? With over 75% of young adults spending 3-4 hours per day (sometimes more) on social media, it's safe to say that "scrolling" isn't going away anytime soon. Social media has several benefits, as it can keep us in touch with family and friends, document our memories, help us learn about current topics, and even master the latest dance craze. However, we also know that it can have a negative affect on a young impressionable mind. What can we do to help them value their unique beauty and traits? Please join our campaign and sign up for our FREE 30A VYBZ magazine created to empower teens and tweens with leadership skills and a Positive Self Image. >> don't forget to gollow us on Instagram << It's hard to believe (OK- not really), but the more time young adults spend on social media sites the more likely they are to have low-self esteem or body issues and are typically a bit moodier. I feel that HOW tweens and teens USE social media will shape whether it will positively or negatively impact their life. Both young and old, we all feel connected when actively engaging with others and sharing content. It can even boost our mood, but spending excessive amounts of time or passively stalking on social media can make us feel lonely and disconnected. One of the several negative effects of social media is how it can make us focus on our body shape or appearance. Unfortunately, many times social media sites can make us feel like we are not good enough if we don't look a certain way. In some cases, we can even begin to start seeking validation via likes and comments, and making comparison to other which has a very negative effect. One of the issues with the images we see online is that they are digitally distorted and are not a representative of real life. >> sign up now for future articles on building a positive body image for teens and tweens << or keep scrolling for more information on social media & wellbeing Digital Distortion vs Reality #digitaldistortion As we scroll through others social media sites, we need to keep in mind that we are only viewing the highlight reels of their lives and most people tend to only share the 'best' version they captured. If the 'EVERYDAY' images tweens are viewing online are all perfectly edited, curated and filtered images, this can negatively image their body confidence. Over 80% of teens and tweens will say that they compare they way they look to how other people look on their social media feeds. Posting the 'perfect selfie' is more like a 30 minute task rather than 30 seconds of fun. Recent studies show that teens will take on average up to 14 pictures in an attempt to get the perfect 'look' or VYB before choosing which one to post. In addition to clicking the camera till everything is just 'right'... we then see images edited with unrealistic everyday beauty standards. Social media filters will alter our appearance by brightening skins, making eyelashes longer, adding makeup - the list goes on. >> get a copy of the 30A VYBZ exclusive online magazine << I will admit, even I love to get on snapchat and use those filters for creativity and some fun self-expressions (my family loves those ones) LOL. But when filters are used to conform to society's beauty expectations, or because you feel insecure posting unedited pics, it is a sign that it might be causing self-esteem issues. This effect is so common, that it very common for tweens/teens to think that they don't look good enough without photo editing - so, now is the perfect opportunity to have the "SELFIE TALK" . We were honored to have the opportunity to not only photograph her, but also her two beautiful daughters, and it was a family affair... • Choosing the Right Location | 30A Senior Portraits

Choosing a great location is one of the most important pieces when setting up your senior photo shoot. The backdrop (style/setting) you select will set the stage for the photo session and will be an essential piece of every shot, pose and, ultimately, the finished product. We recommend picking several locations that are special to you, either a spot you love, somewhere you frequent or a place that best represents your personality. While 30A is most popular for it's beach locations, it also offers some of the most beautiful gardens and unique settings for your senior portraits . One of my favorite ideas for a senior photo session is to photograph right at your home, in the backyard or at a favorite spot on your property. Choosing to photograph at your vacation rental offers a VERY UNIQUE location idea for senior portraits as every vacation rental is decorated different and has something creative to offer as a backdrop. What may seem like everyday home decor to you, becomes a blank canvas for photographers like me who love to think outside the box when it comes to senior portraits. While many opt for a traditional look in their senior photos, I focus on creating a high-fashion, magazine style image for both guys and gals. My goal is to create something epic for each and every senior my camera focuses on. For this session, our first stop was of course... Miss Lisa's home! Lisa's house was the perfect setting for not just one outfit, but three! And to be honest, we could have photographed several more outfits at this location as the landscaping was just gorgeous. We narrowed down wardrobe to three very different styles at this spot. #upscale #grunge #carefree click image to enlarge What are some important things to consider when choosing your senior portrait locations? First off, always remember that if you are looking for 30A beach portraits, those outfits need to be photographed at either sunrise or about one hour before sunset. When photographing on the beach, we are limited on time as we are looking to capture the stunning colors of the sky during those times of the day. Sunrise sessions will always begin right at day break and sunset session will begin on the beach about 40 minutes before sunset. Please check the sunrise/sunset calendar to check time frames for the date you plan to have your senior photography session. Just like everyone else, I love hitting the beach at sunrise or sunset for my senior photo sessions on 30A, but I will admit, I absolutely love photographing at some of the more unique 30A locations like Watercolor Gardens and Vintage shopping vybz. These are a great option and can be done mid-moring or late afternoon! keep scrolling for more 30A photo location tips & ideas #streetscape #meadow Senior Portrait Location Ideas After you have narrowed down the location list, it’s important to think about some key logistics: are there restrooms? Is the distance from the parking to the actual shoot location far? If so, pack comfy shoes for everyone! Will there be places to change outfits, retouch hair and makeup and relax between shots? Will there be crowds nearby—and, if so, are you comfortable shooting in front of others? We’ve seen amazing 30A Senior Portrait sessions everywhere from backyards to arcades, baseball fields, lakes to open meadows. As Santa Rosa Beach Locals, we know the 30A area very well and can help make recommendations based on your unique needs, personality and inspirations. One other location that many don't think of... the local high school! When should I schedule my senior portrait session? Our goal is to capture your HIGH SCHOOL YEARS! Not just your senior year. While this article is about choosing the best location for your senior portrait session, our model for this blog post is Miss Dalaney. Miss D is currently a Sophomore in High School. I am lucky enough to photograph this beautiful young lady a couple of times a year! Why you ask? Because her amazing mother wants to document every amazing change from her 9th grade year to her senior year. I started photographing D in her 9th grade year. Her brother was a senior at the time, and his mother wanted to document each season of his senior year. So we did (4) senior portrait sessions over the course of his senior year. During this time, D would tag along and so I started capturing a few images of her at each session. By the time the year was done, we had enough images to create an Heirloom Album of just her Freshman year. It was at that time that we decided to continue the adventure and we meet up a couple times a year for a quick photo session. At the end of each school year, we have stunning images to create an album that she can display at her Graduation Open House party. If you are a 30A local or visit the 30A area at least once a year, We would love to chat with you about model opportunities for our "High School Years" program. please contact us at (850) 460-4437 What the best time of year for Senior Portraits? As a 30A photographer, we get asked this question frequently. We suggest booking senior portrait session during the summer before you start senior year. Another great time of year is to schedule a senior portrait session during your 30A Spring Break Vacation. During Peak Season, May thru August, we typically book 4-6 weeks in advance. Holidays and spring break vacation times will also book quickly so please schedule those dates as soon as possible as all sessions are on a first come first serve basis. If you need more information about 30A senior Portraits, best locations or pricing questions, please contact us by email at meloniemariephotography@gmail.com or text us at (850) 460-4437.

Casual Beach style is one that every dad loves. Especially the dads with those extra white legs ~ you know who you are! Casual beach wardrobe is not only the perfect option for families that are looking for a timeless feel to their images, it's great for families that also want comfort. Mom's, if you have a family of boys, I highly suggest a casual beach wardrobe for your family photo session. Guys can pair a nice pair of jeans with a classic button down shirt. Give a casual roll and cuff to the sleeves, leave the top button open and you have a fabulous, yet comfortable feel, that provides an upscale timeless aura. Ladies, the key to this look is to keep is simple! Choose a dress or accenting outfit in a color that will accent the deep 30A sunsets (or sunrise). Keep skirts and dresses long enough that you will be comfortable to sit (as pictured above). Will my outfit get wet? To be honest, we hope so! One of the best things about being a beach photographer in paradise (aka 30A) is the chance to capture the fun and ridiculous moments of parents with their children running and playing in the water. We encourage our clients to bring some towels and a change of clothes to their session because we will get sandy, and maybe even end up wet. Every child loves to splash their parent with water, even the big kids. If you are looking for the best memories, belly giggles and stories to be told, let me whisper in your child's ear... • Dress for Success | 30A Family Portraits | What To Wear for your Photo Session

30A PHOTOGRAPHER | FAMILY PORTRAITS | BLUE MOUNTAIN BEACH 5 Tips for choosing Wardrobe for your Beach Family Photo Session As soon as you schedule your 30A Beach Vacation, the very next step is to plan your Family Photo Session. We photograph over 100 sunrise/sunset beach sessions each year and the number one question asked is... What should we wear for our family beach photo session. Every family member has a different idea on what they want to wear, planning wardrobe for multiple family member or even an extended family session can be a daunting task. That's where I come in! While I love the feel of my Nikon camera in my hands and to hear that shutter click when I capture that perfect moment, I also love to help families achieve a luxurious and timeless portrait that they will cherish for a lifetime and pass down from generation to generation. After booking your photo session with Melonie Marie Photography, we will schedule a personal consult with you to discuss your photo style preferences (ie: formal, classic, casual). After we determine your photo style, we can then start planning wardrobe options for each family member. To get you started on the process, keep scrolling to view 5 tips to dressing for success in your beach family portrait session. Tip #1: Coordinate—but don’t be matchy/matchy In a family photo session, let the matriarch of the family choose her/his outfit first, then make sure your outfits complement not only theirs, but one another’s. Choose a consistent color palette (which does not mean the same color). If someone is wearing a bold pattern, dress the rest of the group in more solids, but be sure each carries one or more colors from the “star” outfit for consistency. Tip #2: Accessorize! Jewelry, scarves, hats, bows, bands…it all adds a fun twist to an otherwise “standard” look. Accessories are also a great way to keep hair in place as the beach is always windy. For example, if Mom is wearing a bright pattern with lavender, pink and gray, little sis can rock a a pink headband while Dad can choose a lavender button down and big brother with a gray belt. Rule #3: Try for Texture Layers and textures and can really add depth to your photos. Look for clothes and accessories with rich, simple detailing—lace, ruffles, ribbons, etc—or layer pieces to add dimension and texture. Texture is especially important if you want a lot of black and white shots, which naturally need more visual depth and detail than color images. Also, because you’ll want to keep the pace going during your session, layering is a great way to make quick, convenient outfit changes—pull off the sweater, slip on the vest and you’ve got a whole new look! Add a pop of color! Grandma choose a perfect pale green to add just a little bit of color. Note: Please be sure to wear colors that will compliment the amazing sunset or sunrise and not colors that will compete with the sky. Rule #4: Dress Kids for Comfort & Movement Kids naturally run, skip, dance and jump around during photo sessions—they’re kids! To avoid unnecessary aggravation, let them be comfortable in the clothes and opt for apparel that accentuates their natural energy. Skirts, fedoras, scarves, and button downs allow for natural movement, so when the kids start getting wild, their clothes will look even better. Let's Chat! Contact us (850) 460-4437 Rule #5: Be Timeless You’ll have these pictures for generations - don’t date yourself! Choose classic, timeless pieces, or even vintage apparel and accessories. Opt for the latest trends and you may feel otherwise about that amazing outfit in a few years (or even a few months) from now. 30A Vybz | Exclusive Magazine for Tween and Teen Fashion & Photography. Building a positive body image for teens and tweens of all shapes and sizes. click image to view magazine issue 001 Tweens and teens often face extreme pressure to meet strict, unrealistic and sometimes even harmful, societal ideals around beauty, body build, size and shape. The pursuit of a perfect body or for a perfect appearance can take a heavy toll on confidence, as well as physical and mental health. Overall, the phrase "body image" is how we think, feel and perceive our own bodies. During the tween and teen years, it can be challenging to maintain a healthy body image because of major physical and emotional changes, and especially social pressures, that occur during these development stages of life. Per the Mayo Clinic: Teens and Tweens who have negative thoughts about their bodies are at an increased risk of low self-esteem, depression, substance use, eating disorders, and unhealthy body weight, including being underweight or overweight. My goal for 30A VYBZ is to create a safe environment for teens and tweens to promote a positive body image for all shapes and sizes, and every shade of awkward. Each issue I will feature positive body image content for all body types. Hey there, I'm Melonie, a senior portrait photographer who specializes in working with high school teens to promote a positive body image for all shapes and sizes! Every teen deserves the experience of feeling like a magazine cover model. Don't settle for just "looking great" in your senior photos, anyone can do that. Instead, let's create something dynamic and stunning all while having an incredible senior year adventure! CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORMATION As a 30A Photographer, based in Santa Rosa Beach, I love photographing High School Senior Portraits at the Watersound Beach Club on the Emerald Coast in Florida. Miss E is a 2022 High School graduate of Ohana Institute and will be heading to Alabama in the fall.
